chiropractic therapy
Chiropractic Therapy specializes in the structural integrity of the spine and muscles, providing conservative management of neuromusculoskeletal disorders and other related conditions such as headaches and back, neck and leg pain. However, chiropractors also provide a wide range of therapies focused on the health of the whole person. Other chiropractic care-related therapies offered at the Oasis Center for Health include nutritional therapy, homeopathic therapy, exercise programs and other lifestyle changes.
The Benefits of Chiropractic Manipulation
The main therapy procedure performed by chiropractors is known as manipulation, also called chiropractic adjustment. The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying light pressure to affected areas. This helps realign the body, improving mobility, decreasing pain and allowing damaged tissues to heal.
Problems in the neuromusculoskeletal system can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improperly lifting a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. By examination, a chiropractor can tell you if manipulation may be helpful to your specific condition.
A Different Approach
At the Oasis Center for Health, we take a different approach to chiropractic care. Oasis Center for Health's Dr. Jeff Bergin is not only a chiropractor, but also a board certified chiropractic internist. As a primary care physician for many patients, Dr. Bergin uses chiropractic adjustment, nutrition, homeopathy and exercise as non-invasive therapy options before prescribing medication or turning to other, more invasive therapies. His primary focus is to help patients feel better using the least invasive and most effective therapy possible.
Dr. Bergin approaches chiropractic manipulation as a tool that should be used only when necessary, stopping treatment when the best possible outcome is achieved. By teaching proper self-care and lifestyle habits, he finds ways of keeping chiropractic manipulation and other therapies to a minimum, allowing patients to take control of their health as much as possible.
What to Expect
An initial chiropractic visit at the Oasis Center for Health is very similar to any doctor appointment. The chiropractor will first take your complete health history and perform a physical examination. From this examination, the chiropractor will determine what therapies may be most beneficial to treat your condition.
If it is determined that manipulation is the best approach to treatment, you would begin the therapy by lying down on a comfortable chiropractic adjustment table. The chiropractor would then apply light pressure to areas in the joint that need adjustment. Keep in mind, chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is not painful. In fact, it releases endorphins in the body that make you feel good. However, upon adjustment, you may hear a click, pop or cracking sound. This sound does not signal any harm. Rather, it occurs when trapped gases in the joint are released.
Following an adjustment session, the chiropractor will explain any guidelines for self-care at home so you know what to expect and how to help maximize the benefits of chiropractic care.
Insurance Coverage
Medicare and the majority of insurance carriers cover chiropractic care. However, we encourage all patients to check with their provider before treatment begins.
