What is EFT?

Emotional Freedom Technique is a simple means of balancing the energies of the body that is effective for many symptoms including but not limited to trauma, stress, anxiety, fears, depression, addictive cravings, and more. EFT uses acupressure points tied into the body’s meridians while the client "tunes in" to their challenge in a gentle conversational matter.

What is chiropractic medicine?

Chiropractic was founded on principles similar to Osteopathy and grew up during the same time in the late 1800’s. The theory of chiropractic is that illness or dis-ease is created in the body when the nervous system is irritated. This happens through physical trauma, allergy reactions or stimulation of the nervous system through stress, emotional upheaval or psychological insult. The practice of chiropractic centers on the correction of the nervous system irritation through the use of spinal manipulation. This is a painless movement of spinal joints that moves the joint back to normal alignment and correct function.

What types of problems will chiropractic help?

While chiropractic medicine is generally considered for back and neck pain, it can help with numerous other problems. The use of manipulation can help joints that are not in the spine like elbows, knees, wrists, fingers, ankles and others. By restoring normal motion and positioning, the patient should experience a reduction in pain. In addition to neck, back and join pain, there are interesting studies ongoing that indicate chiropractic may be beneficial for colic in babies, asthma, and allergies.

But pain is not all that chiropractic can help you with. Along with manipulation, chiropractic physicians practice nutritional therapy, rehabilitation and general wellness principles. Some people use their chiropractic physicians as their regular physicians to maintain healthy lifestyles.

What is manipulation?

Manipulation (adjustment) is the movement of a joint through its normal physiological zone and applying a slight rapid movement at the end point. This rapid movement results in a release of the tightness of the joint and the complaint generally goes away. The manipulation may result in a “popping” or “cracking” sound. This does not mean that anything is wrong, it means the joint has reset and is now in proper alignment.

Does manipulation hurt?

Properly delivered manipulations do not hurt. If pain is associated with the manipulation, it was delivered incorrectly. From time to time, patients will report a bit of soreness or stiffness in the area of the manipulation, but this generally lasts for 24 hours at the most.

What other types of problems will chiropractic help?

In addition to neck, back and joint pain, there are interesting studies ongoing that indicate chiropractic may be beneficial for colic in babies, asthma and allergies. General lifestyle and wellness advice helps enhance overall health and wellness.

Does insurance cover my chiropractic care?

Because chiropractic physicians are licensed in all states, insurance companies generally pay for care. The coverage must be checked with your insurance company prior to beginning care.

Why would my doctor order psychotherapy for me if I am dealing with a medical condition? Does this mean he thinks I am crazy or making up my illness?

We see the person holistically, which means that the physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of each person work together and influence each other in terms of creating health or disease. Optimal healing addresses all three and can speed up recovery and adaptation. We believe the body is not only an outward representation of our genes, physical conditioning, nutrition and physical events, but also emotions, thoughts, beliefs and our emotional history. In the words of Carolyn Myss, Ph.D., "our biography becomes our biology."

How would psychological issues play a role in healing?

It is normal to have emotional responses to illness, injury or life events. Your medical condition may create a variety of emotions, such as confusion, anger, fear or hopelessness as well as place stress on relationships, your ability to work or finances. You may have normal ongoing stresses in your life, such as an aging parent, unhappy marriage, rebelling teenagers, divorce or a frustrating career. These emotions produce a physical and chemical reaction in the body. When these emotions are not addressed or managed they can negatively impact your ability to heal and maintain health. There is a body of scientific evidence that links psychological suffering with a restricted ability to heal. An increasing number of traditional practitioners as well as alternative practitioners believe that ongoing emotional and psychological dis-ease can create physical disease in the body.

How does psychotherapy work and how would it help me heal?

Through the process of talking in a supportive, non-judgmental environment with a professional therapist, you learn to identify your emotions, stressors and responses. The therapist, as partner on your journey of self discovery, is there to help you explore your coping style and offer alternative options for responding to stressors. A variety of coping strategies, such as meditation, guided imagery, dream work and journaling are some of the tools that may be taught to help you enhance your relationship with yourself, increase your intuitive skills to aid with your healing and gain control over physical reactions in your body that may interfere with healing.
